Medi-Cal Expansion: Health Coverage for More Californians

Governor Newsom has signed into law a major expansion of California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, that will take effect this May. This expansion will provide full-scope coverage for low-income residents ages 50 and up regardless of their immigration status. It will also increase the amount of time a mother and their newborn child would be eligible to receive Medi-Cal benefits up to one year under the Medi-Cal Access Program. 

Starting this spring, Families Together of Orange County will offer program enrollment assistance on-site for anyone who qualifies for Medi-Cal currently, or under the Medi-Cal expansion.

Who qualifies for full-scope Medi-Cal currently?

  • All people who meet the income threshold (138% of federal poverty guidelines)
  • Those between 0 – 26 years old regardless of immigration status
  • Those in a skilled nursing or intermediate care home
  • Individuals who have refugee status

From May 2022, a new group of people will be eligible to receive Medi-Cal benefits. Who is eligible to receive Medi-Cal benefits under the expansion?

The expansion will qualify all income-eligible residents ages 50 and older, regardless of immigration status. Pregnant individuals and their babies up to 1 year after birth under the Medi-Cal Access Program.

HOW TO APPLY

Families Together of Orange County is preparing to provide Medi-Cal enrollment assistance and education about the expansion to anyone who qualifies starting this spring. All applicants will be guided through the application process by one of FTOC’s Social Services Liaisons completely free of charge. 

Families Together will help make sure that the application process is easy for you and your family with personalized help from our specialists. Depending on the situation, some applicants may even start receiving coverage on the same day.
