What are Mammograms?
Mammograms are medical imaging tests that use low-dose X-rays to capture images of the breast tissue. They are primarily used to screen for breast cancer in women who do not have any symptoms, as well as to diagnose breast cancer in women who have symptoms, such as a lump or changes in the breast.
Why are Mammograms Important?
Mammograms are important because they can detect breast cancer early, often before any symptoms are noticeable. Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment and improves the overall prognosis. Regular mammograms are recommended for women over 40 or those who are at higher risk for developing breast cancer.
Who Needs Mammograms?
More than 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease, making it that much more important to make sure everyone is assessing their own risk level, and getting screened as recommended by your doctor. It may be time for a mammogram if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You’re at least 40 years old
- You have a maternal family history of breast cancer
- You have had a previous breast biopsy
- You have been told that you carry the breast cancer mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 (this qualifies for a screening at 35 years)
- It has been longer than 12 months since your last screening mammogram
*Speak with your doctor to assess your risk level and confirm when you should receive a mammogram.
Benefits of the 3D Dimension System
With a state-of-the-art 3D Hologic Tomo Mammogram Machine designed to be the fastest, highest resolution breast tomosynthesis system on the market, patients have access to some of the best mammogram technology in the world.
When obtaining a mammogram, 3D imaging allows the radiologist to examine the breast tissue in layers instead of a single image. It is used in addition to 2D imaging at the time the exam is performed, which allows for more accurate detection of breast abnormalities. Benefits of a 3D Mammogram Screening include:
- Minimizes the need for additional imaging, return visits and surgical intervention
- Reduces false positives outcomes
- Detection of breast cancer at smaller and more treatable sizes
- Better assessment of dense breast tissue
Patient Experience
The Hologic Tomo Mammogram Machine provides the highest level of accuracy and comfort for each patient. With flexible compression paddles that contour to the shape of the breast, discomfort is minimized throughout the exam.
At Families Together, you’re in safe and reliable hands for all your Mammogram Screening needs. Our experienced Mammogram Technologist and medical staff will make you feel right at home.
