Dr. Don Vu’s Guide to a Brilliant Smile: 5 Essential Oral Hygiene Tips

Maintaining good oral hygiene is key to keeping your smile bright and your teeth strong. At Families Together of Orange County, we’re dedicated to providing you with the best possible dental care, and that includes helping you maintain a healthy smile between visits. That’s why our Associate Dental Director, Dr. Don Vu, has put together five simple oral hygiene tips to promote excellent dental health.

1. Flossing Before Bed:

Flossing is just as important as brushing when it comes to removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Many people neglect flossing, thinking that brushing alone is sufficient for cleaning their teeth. However, toothbrush bristles can’t reach the tight spaces between teeth where bacteria thrive. That’s where floss comes in. By flossing every night before bed, you can effectively remove plaque and debris from these hard-to-reach areas, preventing cavities and gum disease.

2. Brushing Technique:

Brushing your teeth properly is essential for effective plaque removal. Holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums allows the bristles to reach beneath the gum line, where bacteria tend to accumulate. Using a circular motion ensures that you cover all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. It’s important to be gentle while brushing to avoid causing damage to your gums or enamel, which is why Dr. Vu recommends using a soft bristle brush.

3. Spit, Don’t Rinse:

After brushing your teeth, you might be tempted to rinse your mouth with water to get rid of the toothpaste foam. However, rinsing washes away the protective fluoride left behind by the toothpaste. Fluoride is essential for strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities. Instead of rinsing, simply spit out the excess toothpaste. This allows the fluoride to adhere to your teeth, providing added protection against cavities. By making this small change to your oral hygiene routine, you can maximize the benefits of fluoride and keep your teeth strong and healthy.

4. Post-Acidic Beverage Care:

Acidic beverages like coffee, soda, and citrus juices can weaken tooth enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to erosion. Many people make the mistake of brushing their teeth immediately after consuming acidic drinks, thinking that it will help remove the acid and protect their teeth. However, brushing right after consuming acidic beverages can actually do more harm than good. The acid softens the enamel, and brushing can cause further erosion. Instead of brushing, wait at least 30 minutes after consuming acidic drinks to allow your saliva to neutralize the acid. Then, rinse your mouth with water to help wash away any remaining acids. By following this advice, you can protect your teeth from acid erosion and maintain a healthy smile.

5. Timing Matters for Kids and Candy:

We know that kids love their sweets, but timing is crucial when it comes to protecting their teeth from acid attacks. Sugary snacks and candies can lead to acid production in the mouth, which can weaken tooth enamel and increase the risk of cavities. Encourage children to enjoy candy as a dessert after a meal rather than as a snack throughout the day. This helps minimize the time their teeth are exposed to sugars, reducing the risk of decay. By teaching children good oral hygiene habits from a young age, you can set them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

By incorporating these simple tips into your daily routine, you can maintain a healthy smile for years to come. Remember, consistency is key when it comes to oral hygiene.
