Empowering Your Health: Cervical Cancer Screenings & HPV Vaccines Schedules

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and at Families Together of Orange County, we are committed to sharing the most up-to-date health information to keep our community safe. While the foundation of cervical health remains regular screening, 2026 brings a renewed focus on the combined power of early detection and the HPV vaccine to eliminate this disease.

Modern Cervical Cancer Screening Options for Every Stage of Life

Regular screenings are essential because they can identify pre-cancerous changes before they develop into something more serious. For individuals aged 21 to 29, a Pap smear every three years remains the standard for checking for abnormal cells. Once you reach age 30, you may have more options, including primary HPV testing every five years or a “co-testing” approach that combines both a Pap smear and an HPV test. Recent updates in 2026 also highlight the growing availability of self-collection options for HPV testing in some clinical settings, making it easier than ever to prioritize your health.

Prevention Starts with the HPV Vaccine

While screenings find changes after they happen, the HPV vaccine is designed to prevent the infections that cause the vast majority of cervical cancers. The CDC recommends routine vaccination for children aged 11 or 12 to ensure they are protected early, though the series can begin as early as age 9. For those who did not receive the vaccine as adolescents, the CDC recommends “catch-up” shots for everyone through age 26, while adults between 27 and 45 should consult their provider to see if they might still benefit.

HPV Vaccine Safety & Schedule

The HPV vaccine is a safe, proven tool that has undergone extensive testing to ensure it effectively protects our community. The number of doses you need depends on your age; those starting before age 15 typically only need two doses, while those starting later require a three-dose series. Most patients only experience mild side effects, such as a sore arm or slight redness at the injection site. To ensure your safety, FTOC requires patients to remain seated for 15 minutes following their vaccination to prevent any potential fainting, and we recommend those who are pregnant wait until after delivery to receive the vaccine.
