Need Help Signing Up for Medicare? We’re Here for You.

Turning 65, retiring, or just becoming eligible for Medicare can feel overwhelming. Between Parts A, B, C, and D, enrollment deadlines, and a stack of confusing mail, it’s easy to feel lost — or worse, to miss a deadline and end up with a penalty that follows you for years.

The good news: you don’t have to figure it out alone. Families Together of Orange County (FTOC) offers free, one-on-one help to walk you through the Medicare enrollment process, answer your questions, and make sure you don’t miss important deadlines.

Why Medicare Enrollment Can Be Confusing

Medicare isn’t a single, simple program — it’s several parts that work together, and the choices you make can affect your coverage and costs for years to come:

  • Part A covers hospital care
  • Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) bundles coverage through private insurers
  • Part D covers prescription drugs

Choosing the wrong combination, or missing a deadline, can mean gaps in your coverage or penalties that stick with you for as long as you have Medicare.

Key Enrollment Periods to Know

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month window around your 65th birthday — it starts 3 months before your birthday month and ends 3 months after. This is usually your first chance to sign up.
  • General Enrollment Period: January 1 – March 31 each year, for those who missed their Initial Enrollment Period.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (Open Enrollment): October 15 – December 7 each year. This is your yearly chance to switch plans, change from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (or back), or adjust your drug coverage.
  • Special Enrollment Periods: Available in certain situations, like if you’re losing employer coverage or moving.

Missing the right window — especially for Part B — can lead to a late enrollment penalty added to your premium for as long as you have coverage. Knowing which window applies to your situation is one of the most valuable things we can help you figure out.
