Families Together del Condado de Orange celebra el Mes del Corazón Americano
TUSTIN, Calif., February 5, 2022 – Families Together of Orange County (FTOC), a nonprofit community health center in Southern California, is celebrating American Heart Month by shining a light on cardiovascular health and providing education to its patients and community on ways people can improve their heart health.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the United States, but according to the American Heart Association, lower income populations have historically confronted more barriers to cardiovascular diagnosis and care. With obstacles to care including language barriers, lack of access or health insurance, community health centers like Families Together of Orange County play a vital role in the education and prevention of cardiovascular related diseases in lower income communities.
Dr. Neal Schwartz, Associate Medical Director for Families Together of Orange County comments:
“Families Together works to increase access to services and programs, regardless of inability to pay. This includes assisting with lifestyle changes and education such as nutrition consultation, cooking classes, weight resistance training and even mental health services all paired with our extensive medical services. This approach allows patients to get the tools they need to take control of their health and hopefully avoid chronic conditions such as heart disease.”
With 1 in 4 deaths attributed to heart disease every year, certain medical conditions such as diabetes, and lifestyle choices such as excessive drinking, can put people at even greater risk of developing heart disease.
To help educate its patients and the community, Families Together of Orange County is promoting the following list of tips in an article on its website English and Spanish across the organization throughout the month of February to spotlight ways people can learn to improve their cardiovascular health:
- Eat healthy
- Stay active
- Control your cholesterol and blood pressure
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Manage stress in ways that work for you such as listening to music or spending time outdoors
With the educational component along with a myriad of programs that increase access to services and resources that help combat chronic conditions, Families Together of Orange County aims to help change the narrative surrounding heart disease in lower income communities.
